The search for Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) headphones goes through a high budget market, so when I saw the Avantree ANC032 headphones with the word ANC in the specification for an MSRP of 49$ I was intrigued.
I've tested them for a couple of days and here are the PROs and CONs:
PROs
Decent sound quality for the price, with clear voices and OK base response.
Low latency Bluetooth - watching video without lag!
Low budget ANC headphones.
Very lightweight and comfortable
Fold flat for easy travel (comes with a soft fabric carrying case), or collapse for easy storage.
Soft finish on the headphones is a nice touch
Can work in wired mode with 3.5mm input
CONs
The ANC just muffles the sound a little bit - not really cancels noise.
Heat might cause ear sweat after long periods of listening
Not for bass-heads
Mediocre battery life - with up to 15hrs.
Feel a bit plasticky and cheap
Micro-USB charging port - I really want for everything to go USB-C!
Bottom line: Don't buy these headphones if you're looking for noise cancellation of any kind. These are comfortable, with OK sound and mediocre battery life - Unless they are on sale I would look elsewhere.
Comfort
I've tried many many ANC over-the-ears headphones, but there are 2 models that I've found to be the most comfortable - the Sony MH-1000XM2 (or Mark 1 as well) and the Bose QC35.
Wearing these headphones is a pleasant surprise, they are so lightweight you don't even feel you wear anything. The ear-cups are less breathable compared to the high-end models so I do see more ear sweat in long periods of listening - keep that in mind.
Performance - Noise Cancelling
Well, ANC is really just a mystery here - turning it on with the dedicated switch just seem to change how noise is muffled. Comparing it to the Sony MH-1000XM2 with airplane noises - which isn't even in the same league of the Avantree - the Avantree headphones really do nothing.
Performance - Music
The sound quality is OK, you do get voice clarity which is great to watch videos on but bass is lacking.
The output volume is very good and I didn't pass 70% for comfortable hearing - although it may distort at higher volumes.
All-in-all an OK sounding headphones for the price.
One thing I found very good was the stable Bluetooth connection which even at 20m and through several dry walls wouldn't break, adding the low latency Bluetooth to the mix and the performance of the connection is up with the best out there.
Battery Life
Battery life is OK and it is rated at 10hrs of ANC and Bluetooth listening and I believe that if you turn off the ANC you can get up to 15hrs of battery life.
