After a few months using the Oneplus 5 as my daily driver - I was sold! the fast response, the battery life and that price tag! My thought was that there is very little that needs to be changed, and one of those things was the rather large bezels. Enter - Oneplus 5T!

I've been using the Oneplus 5T as my daily driver for the past 2 weeks now, I have the 64Gb (6Gb of RAM) version which only comes in midnight black. All tests are done using the native OxygenOS 4.7.4.

By now, there should be a lot of reviews out there with the top tear model of 128Gb (8Gb of RAM) but this isn't it. What can change? My guess was the battery life (worth taking a look right?).

If you have decided to buy one - look to the end of the article for some recommanded cases.

Bottom line: This is a great smartphone in a very attractive body and price tag!

  • This is a great smartphone at an OK value price wise.

  • The software is Android based, great and fluid while getting regular updates.

  • The battery is among above average - easy covering a day of moderate usage, updates might make it even better.

  • The camera is much approved than the last model - dynamic range is way better, while the zoom option took a hit due to the lack of dedicated zoom lens, the depth effect is loads of fun, slow motion video is not good but overall camera performance is great.

Battery Life

I consider myself a moderate smartphone user, my phone setup is as follows:

  • 30% brightness with adaptive brightness turned on.

  • 3 Gmail accounts with push notification every 30 minutes.

  • Location always on with battery saver mode, but at high accuracy when navigating.

  • No games.

  • Bluetooth always on, connected to my Hybrid smartwatch - The Fossil Q Nate (Link).

I've been unplugging the phone every day at 8 a.m. and been getting a consistent 4:00 plus hours of screen on time for a day and half of usage, with navigating, taking pictures and leaving the phone unplugged at night.

At night while unplugged, I've been losing 10% of charge pretty consistently - this is above average, but software updates should make this number a bit smaller - around 6%.

These numbers are not the best out there, while the previous generation was better in terms of screen on time - getting consistent 5 hours of screen on time - this phone (with it's bigger 6" screen) will probably carry you out easily throughout a busy day, without the need for charging.

Quick disclaimer - Tests were done in London, UK. A great city with bad cellular coverage (especially on the tube) and the WiFi wasn't particularly good - so battery life obviously suffered more than it should.

BUT if that need comes, well - DASH charger is one of the fastest chargers out there with 29% of charge from zero after only 15 minutes.

Camera

The camera setup here is:

On the back - Dual cameras with 16MP and 20MP (The 20MP is used mostly for low light situations)

On the front - 16MP single lens.

The camera here is a great improvement over the last generation, although spec-wise - it's nearly identical.

Having said that, this camera is one of the best I've used -

  • Pictures in good light come out great, dynamic range is on point and the pictures are sharp and detailed.

  • Depth effect is fun to play with.

  • Low light pictures are not amazing - but most smartphone cameras having trouble with low light.

  • Panorama mode is fantastic.

  • The video (even 4K video) is electronically stabilized and the 1080p 60fps is very pleasing.

  • Selfie is above average with beauty mode added with the possibility of screen flash.

  • Time-laps video is among the best out there (although Apple implementation is in my opinion the best).

  • Slow motion video is "meh" at best with 120fps at 720p.

Oneplus 5T vs Oneplus 5 - The camera department

Zoom comparison - (Oneplus 5T LEFT & Oneplus 5 RIGHT)

You can plainly see the dynamic range on the Oneplus 5T is much better than the Oneplus 5 - making the pictures look like they're washed out.

Having said that - the Oneplus 5T is seeing more noise on the zoomed pictures than the Oneplus 5, but the dynamic range tradeoff is worth it.

Good light (Oneplus 5T LEFT & Oneplus 5 RIGHT) Samples

Once again, you can plainly see the dynamic range on the Oneplus 5T is much better than the Oneplus 5 - making the pictures look like they're washed out.

Low light (Oneplus 5T LEFT & Oneplus 5 RIGHT) Samples

Once again, you can plainly see the dynamic range on the Oneplus 5T is much better than the Oneplus 5 - making the pictures look like they're washed out. Here you can also notice the Oneplus 5T produce sharper pictures with less noise than the Oneplus 5.

Depth effect (Starring - Winter Bear!) (Oneplus 5T LEFT & Oneplus 5 RIGHT) Samples

Color me surprised - The Oneplus 5T produced a nice bokeh effect with nice colors and sharp edges around the head, but for the life of me - I couldn't reproduce the same effect on the Oneplus 5 - the light from the window kept getting in the same exact shot the Oneplus 5T had no issues with. I guess a software update might correct that issue, but until than - the Oneplus 5T came on top!
