I've been using the Oneplus 5 as my daily driver for the past 4 weeks now, I have the 64Gb (6Gb of RAM) version which only comes in slate gray. All tests are done using the native OxygenOS 4.5.8.

There are a lot of reviews out there with the top tear model of 128Gb (8Gb of RAM) but this isn't it. What can change? My guess was the battery life (worth taking a look right?).

If you have decided to buy one - look to the end of the article for some recommanded cases.

Bottom line: Other than the bigger than wanted bezels - this is a great smartphone to have!

  • This is a great smartphone at an OK value price wise.

  • The software is Android based, great and fluid while getting regular updates.

  • The battery is among the best - easy covering a day of moderate usage

  • The camera is better than most while the zoom option is fun and useful, the depth effect is loads of fun, slow motion video is not good but overall camera performance is great.

Battery Life

I consider myself a moderate smartphone user, my phone setup is as follows:

  • 30% brightness with adaptive brightness turned on.

  • 3 Gmail accounts with push notification every 30 minutes.

  • Location always on with battery saver mode, but at high accuracy when navigating.

  • No games.

I've been unplugging the phone every day at 6 a.m. and been getting a consistent 4:30 plus hours of screen on time for a day and half of usage, with navigating, taking pictures and leaving the phone unplugged at night.

At night while unplugged, I've been losing 6% of charge pretty consistently.

These numbers are nothing short of amazing, and this phone will probably carry you out easily throughout a busy day, without the need for charging.

BUT if that need comes, well - DASH charger is one of the fastest chargers out there with 29% of charge from zero after only 15 minutes.

Camera

The camera setup here is:

On the back - Dual cameras with 16MP regular zoom and 20MP x2 zoom (although only x1.6 is optical)

On the front - 16MP single lens.

This is a mixed bag for me, and not justified mixed bag. I come from the Sony Xperia Z5 with its 23MP sensor and pixel peeping there is much more satisfying...

Having said that, this camera is one of the best I've used -

  • Pictures in good light come out great, the optical zoom is a surprising benefit that I didn't expect

  • Depth effect is fun to play with.

  • Low light pictures are not amazing - but most smartphone cameras having trouble with low light.

  • Panorama mode is fantastic.

  • The video (even 4K video) is electronically stabilized and the 1080p 60fps is very pleasing.

  • Selfie is above average with beauty mode added with the possibility of screen flash.

  • Time-laps video is among the best out there (although Apple implementation is in my opinion the best).

  • Slow motion video is "meh" at best with 120fps at 720p.

Zoom comparison - (Zoom on the LEFT & Cropped on the RIGHT)

Low light (Starring - Star Wars Stuff!) Samples

Depth effect (Starring - A cone!) Samples

Time-lapse Samples

Slow motion (Just bad...) Samples

BONUS SECTION

If your mind is set on this phone, there are 2 cases I recommend:

Spigen - OnePlus 5 Case Rugged Armor - Drop proof with very little bulk added, buttons are clicky and all the ports are wide open.

NILLKIN Synthetic fiber - Carbon fiber look alike, with an integrated metal plate for magnetic car mount. the case is very thin and buttons are exposed.
