These days, most of your ADSL internet providers let you rent "their take" on the Modem/Router. Most of the times, those devices are significantly inferior to the hardware available to the general public, plus - rental means that on the long run it will probably cost more than just buying the hardware yourself.
I genuinely believe you should buy the Modem/Router yourself instead of renting it, that way you can easily change your service provider with relative ease.
The best value for money I've found is the TP-Link VR600. Yes, there are better Modem/Router options out there, but here you get a lot of value for your money and a very reliable device.
Bottom line:
PROs
Easy to set-up.
4 LAN (RJ45) connection of 10/100/1000 Gbps.
Elegant looking device.
Gives great Wifi signal for medium sized houses.
Wifi speeds of up to 300Mbps for 2.4GHz frequency and 1300Mbps for 5GHz frequency.
Reliable, can work for weeks without disconnecting.
Firmware updates are frequent and bugs are taken care of rather fast.
Can be used to connect a hard drive via USB to be shared on the network.
CONs
Rather large device with it's 3 antennas - can only be placed horizontally.
Big houses won't have the best Wifi signal with this device, and would need additional device other than this router.
It really has very little faults...
