These days cheap TVs are getting very good picture quality, but keeps on lacking in the sound department. Even high-end TVs can produce an OK sound, so keep that in mind.

If you're like me, you want to enjoy your watching experience as much as you can, but sound systems can be quite expensive and take up a lot of space.

The different options I see for the sound system with their PROs and CONs are as follows:

  1. Full home theatre experience: Using a receiver and at least 5 speakers located around the watching area with the addition of a subwoofer.

PROs - Probably the closest to a theatre experience to get at home, sound stage is excellent. CONs - The most expensive setup, takes a lot of space (Speakers, subwoofer and receiver), wiring (even with wireless speakers - they still need electricity) can be a hassle and clutter the room.

  1. Sound-bar: This option became very popular lately as it can produce an impressive sound with very little space requirements. Recommendation: Choose a sound-bar with wireless subwoofer for more bass accent. PROs - Takes very little space, can be wall mounted, creates an impressive sound stage - fills the room with sound. CONs - Can block TV area, not the prettiest living-room arrangement, can't replace a 5.1 sound system, needs a compatible audio out from the TV or player, high-end can be pricy.

  2. Stereo speakers: The cheapest option other than the TV speakers, contains 2 speakers from each side of the TV.

PROs - most options are far better than the TV speakers, lots of different designs (tall speakers, small speakers etc.). CONs - This isn't a real movie experience, adds more wires than expected.

Bottom line: The order of the options are from Best to better (than your TV). My personal preference is the sound-bar if your'e yet to settle at a permanent housing, it's a compact solution that can be easily moved.

But the real bottom line is - stop using the TV's speakers and upgrade yourself to a better listening experience.

Among the sound-bar and speaker companies you need to checkout: Polk audio, Yamaha, Bose, Sonos and Sony.
