infuse 5 - iOS & tvOS Media Center app Review

There is some misconception that Apple's operating system is somewhat of a closed environment which no regular task can be done easily. Although the Apple's operating system isn't as open as the Android counterpart - the current state is much improved over the past few years.

One of the most frequently asked question I get regarding Apple's products is: "How do I play media like movies or TV episodes with different file types without converting the file" - ENTER infuse app by firecore.

infuse is a media player app for iOS (iPod, iPhone and iPad) and tvOS (Apple TV). I've had infuse since version 2.0 (current version is 5.3.1) and it had more than a few changes these past few years.

I will be reviewing the paid subscription app, which currently goes for 6.99$ per year but there is also a free version which doesn't contain some of the features (the difference can be seen on the firecore web site).

PROs:

  • The app can play a lot of different file types: .avi, .mpeg, .mp4, .mkv etc.

  • It can handle playback resolution of up to 4k (resolution of 3840×2160 pixels), although iOS devices currently don't have the screen to support 4k - downscale of the resolution is inevitable.

  • The playback controls on iOS are superb: Slide left or right on the screen to go back or forwards, slide up or down on the left side to change the brightness and on the right side to change the volume.

  • The app can stream or Airplay the content to supporting TVs directly from your iOS device.

  • Metadata (Movie or TV show cover and details) are downloaded automatically in order to display your media library beautifully.

  • You can transfer files easily to your iOS device using wireless connection (direct download from your computer, shared folder or wireless iTunes sync) or wired connection (iTunes sync).

  • infuse on tvOS can use network storage in order to stream content.

  • You can download subtitles directly on the app play screen, the source is opensubtitles.org and language support may vary.

CONs

  • Price went up the past few years, the more recent change is go to a yearly subscription in order to keep receiving updates.

  • Although it has been promised - tvOS still doesn't have HEVC (High Efficiency Video Codec = H./x265) support. This is the newest codec which keeps files small and quality high.

  • The app is having difficulty on tvOS to keep large TV shows library metadata up-to-date.

Bottom Line

There is no perfect app, and this one is no different. This is one of the most reliable, easy to use and frankly - beautiful media player app I ever came across.

Yes, the price is high for a media player... especially the yearly fee - but the updates have become more frequent since the price went up, maybe it's related - I don't know.

The PROs outweigh the CONs every which way you'll look at it, especially when most of the CONs can be resolved with a software update. if price is an important factor,I recommend giving the free version a spin and see how it goes.
